The Math program at Ardsley Middle School aims to connect the Standards for Mathematical Practice to the Standards for Mathematical Content within the Common Core framework.
Students are encouraged to use modeling strategies when problem solving which allows them to gain intellectual stamina and tools for success. The resulting understanding will allow them to be more flexible mathematicians and apply mathematics to practical situations. In addition, as the integration of technology increases, our program emphasizes the importance of estimation and reasonableness when justifying conclusions.

2. What does an accelerated sequence look like for math?
- Grade 7: Completes the 7th grade curriculum and most of the 8th grade curriculum

- Is it better to be successful in grade-level math or struggle in an accelerated math course?
Our goal is for every student to be successful in a level that is appropriate for them. Maintaining confidence, developing strong mathematical understanding, and building a strong base of foundational skills are of critical importance. The decision to accelerate a student should not compromise their ability to develop those important foundational skills. We also want students to remain engaged in math throughout all four years of high school.
- What is the difference between honors courses and the accelerated sequence?
Accelerated courses move at a faster pace, typically covering two years of content in one year in order to reach Algebra I by 8th grade. The first opportunity to be accelerated begins in 7th grade. Honors courses are grade-level courses that enrich a parallel course. The first opportunity to be placed in an honors class begins in 6th grade. Honors-level courses provide substantial enrichment through challenging material that exceeds the standard curriculum. Assessments in honors courses are more rigorous.
- What is the recommendation for an honors course based on?
Honors recommendations are based on a combination of:
- Consistently high achievement
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated perseverance and independence
- Curiosity and a willingness to engage in challenging work and discussions.
- What is the recommendation for the accelerated sequence based on? What strengths should my child have?
In determining the most appropriate placement, we closely review student performance in both 5th and 6th grade math. Criteria includes:
- High achievement on assessments
- Student performance in math class (work habits, consistency)
- Professional judgment
- What if my child is not recommended for the accelerated sequence?
If you disagree with recommended placement, we encourage families to first speak with the child’s teacher to better understand the placement recommendation. If questions remain, there is a formal process that includes a conversation with the principal and the option to sign a waiver for placement into the accelerated sequence. The deadline to change placement for the 26-27 school year is June 24, 2026.
- What is the “success” rate for students who are “waived in” to the accelerated class?
Historically, only (about) half the students who are waived into the accelerated sequence perform at or above the class average. The other half tend to fall below the average or choose to move out of the course.
- What is the workload like in the accelerated sequence vs. the grade-level sequence?
Both pathways are rigorous and aligned to student needs. However, the accelerated sequence requires a greater level of independence and responsibility due to the pace and volume of content covered.
10. Is Algebra a high school course that will show up on my child’s high school transcript?
Yes. Algebra I is a high school course, and the final grade is included on the student’s high school transcript and factored into their GPA. There is also a high school level Regents exam at the end of this course and that score is also included on the student’s high school transcript.
11. Is there a path to honors subsequent to 6th grade?
Yes. There are multiple entry points into honors courses in math, and students may be recommended at different points based on their growth and performance.
12. Are there any placement tests that are used to inform placement decisions?
There is one placement test at the end of 5th grade that students may choose to take if they are interested in being considered for the 6th grade honors course. Other criteria used for placement into an accelerated or honors course include those mentioned above.
13. What are future opportunities in math?
Regardless of whether a student is accelerated or not, there are opportunities to be placed in honors level classes in high school. In addition, there are opportunities to take Advanced Placement classes for all students, regardless of their sequence in middle school.
