AMS History Club Participates in Monument Ceremony Reenactment
The AMS History Club, in collaboration with the Village of Elmsford and the Ardsley Historical Society, recently organized a reenactment of the monument dedication ceremony for local Revolutionary War hero, Isaac Van Wart at the Elmsford Reformed Church and Cemetery.
During the event, students recited the words spoken on June 11, 1829, when the monument was placed over Van Wart's grave. Club members dressed in colonial militia attire and engaged in marching exercises and the mourning of arms as part of the tribute.
Isaac Van Wart is renowned for his role as one of the captors of British Major John Andre, who conspired with Benedict Arnold to surrender West Point to the British Army during the American Revolution.
Following the ceremony, students were given a tour of the church, which was constructed in 1793 and ceased as an active church in 2017.
The event was made possible thanks to Deb Williams of the Historical Committee of Elmsford, who graciously opened up the site for the occasion.
